Review: X-Men: The Last Stand
Wolverine, Storm, and the one with the funny hair, return in the latest episode of the X-Men saga...
Rating: 3 / 10
Bryan Singer directed The Usual Suspects .. Later, he wrote and directed X-Men 1, and X-Men 2. Two excellent films which used a concentration on character development to help the audience accept the rather fantastic nature of the film.
X-Men: The Last Stand, was directed by Brett Ratner - A man best known for Madonna music videos, and also responsible for Jackie Chan's least interesting films.
Apparently, having noted how Bryan Singer used the characters to really give meaning to the stories, he decided he needed lots of character development as well. How does a music video director do character development? Well, he starts by throwing in some back-stories that we'd never heard about for characters we know very well. Bit painful. Naturally we get some flashbacks and dream sequences, for all those people who want to go and see part 3 of a series of films without watching the first two.. Mmhmmm ... Oh, and this one will seem familiar - A completely unheardof character appears on the scene, and is greeted with "Welcome back old friend! Thought we'd never see you again!" .. Yuh.
So after 60 minutes of that shit - Something happens. What is it? A central character develops a second personality and does immense damage to the group! Can you believe it? Of course, immediately following that the character's battle with the two personalities renders him/her a complete vegetable, because otherwise he/she would easily win the following war for whichever side he/she had the inkling to assist.
I don't think I'm giving anything away to tell you that the goodies win in the end, and by now you can probably work out why - The baddies suffer from a massive and sudden onset of stupidity which causes them to completely mismanage their resources and the goodies neutralise them without killing them.
Even Mystique, who on her own would make a film worth watching, was all but completely missing.
The only reason I can think of to see this film is if an X-Men 4 comes out, made by someone decent, and you want to know the story before you see it. (Cause someone decent won't have filled their film with flashbacks for the intellectually impaired)
