Uhm...

What to say? :)

This black and white movie was released in 1988, and brought its writer/directory Shinya Tsukamoto his first big hit of fame.

Exactly why, I'm not sure .. I mean, no doubt he was doing something pretty unique, and that in itself is noteworthy .. but, err .. I couldn't really get into it.

The basic plot, if I followed it at all, was that a guy (Credited as "The Metal Fetishist") with a tendency to stick pieces of not-entirely-surgical metal in his body, goes slightly mad, runs into traffic, and is hit by a respectable Sararyman out for a quiet drive with his girlfriend.

The sararyman is forthwith haunted by the presumed dead metal fetishist, who somehow turns the poor fellow into a lumpy collection of badly glued-on props.

Quite a lot of this 67 minute film is devoted to the minor inconvenience this causes his girlfriend. So much, in fact, that it makes you wonder whether the rest of the "story" was just built around this one point...

Nonetheless, a confusing film which is very difficult to watch for a large number of reasons, many of which entirely stylistic. This movie was apparently a big influence on most japanese horror movie makers who have come since. I haven't seen many japanese horror films, though there is a lot in this film that reminded me of the original version of The Ring, and one of two of the weirder Anime movies I've seen.

Probably worth seeing once, just to broaden your horizons .. but don't spend too much money on it. :)
