Review: Memento

Er, I dunno?

Rating: 8 / 10

Okay, this movie is really good, but don't see it if you have a headache. Or you're not too bright.

It starts at the end of the story, and progresses backwards through to the beginning.

Of course, it's hardly any kind of spoiler for me to tell you there's a twist at the end - but I'm pretty sure that you'll be impressed by it whether you know it's coming or not. :)

Guy Pearce does a really great job - His character does exactly what it needs to do to give you, the audience member, an appropriate understanding of him. In fact, all the cast members do this very very well, especially given the extra complexity of having to undevelop your impressions of them as the movies goes on, because of course, it's going backwards.

The two primary supporting characters are played by Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano, which I think actually helps a little. They played a good character and a bad character in The Matrix, which gives you a slight pre-judging of the characters. One wonders if they cast these two with this in mind. If so - great idea. :)

You'll probably spend a while after the movie wondering how everything worked together.. It'll all make sense at first, then you'll find yourself thinking "wait, that doesn't connect", and then realise it does, and so on until you're satisfied. Go with it. :)

Don't let anybody tell you too much about this movie. At least not about the story. Go see it. If you can follow it, you'll enjoy it.
