Review: Duets

"Six lost souls in search of a little harmony..." Aww!

Rating: 6 / 10

I want a woman thrashing around on top of me screaming "Feelin' alright! Oooh ho!"

I kept watching the Suzy Loomis character wondering why I recognised the actress but couldn't work out who she was. It's Maria Bello with brown hair! Not flattering for her, but it's nice to know that Maria Bello is in a movie with the line "I'd consider it an honour and a priviledge to suck your dick.".

Unfortunately, I made the near fatal mistake of liking a couple of the songs from this movie. I didn't like enough of them to even consider buying the soundtrack, so I just grabbed the two I did like from the net. Oops. Anyhow, mum heard me playing them and asked about them. Two days later she'd bought the soundtrack "for me" and now refuses to turn the fucken thing off. The soundtrack isn't all that bad, actually, but it's all Karaokeised music (sped up, really fake, too much beat, etc) with people who don't sing for a living singing over the top. Well, there are two singers, but the rest .. aren't. That mixed with my mother humming, singing, or whistling along, has given me quite a distaste for the music. I enjoy it when I'm alone, though. :)

The movie is pretty good. It's not about anything in particular, other than how 6 people end up making their way to a particular karaoke competition, but the ways in which they do it are actually quite entertaining.

There isn't much that I can really say without giving the story(/ies) away, but Gwyneth Paltrow does quite a convincing job of being a stupid vegas waitress, Huey Lewis does a suspiciously good job of being Huey Lewis, Paul Giamatti does a great job of being a crazy white guy, and the rest fit in well.

It was a bit disappointing to see the movie resort to making an exceptionally fat guy sing really badly (Let's remember that the characters had to qualify at smaller competitions to get into this big one) in an attempt to retain the "happy mood" in preparation for the climax, but that was the only real "oh gawd" moment in the movie.

Worth seeing, but there's no advantage to seeing it in the cinema. :)
