Blah!

Hi! I thought i'd post something since the first thing you see when you visit the site is a picture of a dress. I don't know why I gave my wife access to post things here :)

I started my new job this week, and it's been really good so far. I did a 3 day training course on Flex on site, we do Adobe training so I sat in on a normally scheduled course. Most of the stuff covered I already knew from my experience with the product, however there were quite a few useful tips and tricks I did pick up so it was well worth it.

The work environment is great. I'm working with a bunch of smart people, both creative and technical, and while everyone works hard there's also a generally fun atmosphere in the office. Also I've finally got those dual-monitors I've been after all these years in corporate!

Now that I'm settled in, I have to start doing some real billable work, which I am actually looking forward to. If there's anything cool I do, that I am allowed to talk about, you'll know about it!

A dress made from a skirt

dress made from skirt ( front)

Two days ago I made a dress from my mother-in-law’s old skirt. Since Sasha asked - the reason why I made a dress from a skirt was very simply because it was too small, and I could not zip it up. So I didn’t think about it for very long, I turned the skirt upside down and I started making my dress.

First I had to unstitch the back of the skirt, then I put elastic in the bottom (now it was the top), and I sewed in a new zip. I also had to sew in some folds, and add some straps.

Cycle Commuter II

I've been doing some more research, and visited another shop, and now I have more things to mull over than just buying the first best bike that I chose before!

Apple and Walnut Risotto

This isn't actually a recipe posting because this recipe came from Cook with Jamie, so it'd be rude to post it. This is more of a post to say how freaking tasty this thing was.

Apple and Walnut Risotto
Apple and Walnut Risotto - not necessarily as pretty as it tastes :)

The recipe contains 100g of Gorgonzola, 50g Goat Cheese, plus parmesan for 300g of raw rice. This was only a half-portion of the recipe too, although according to the book the full recipe serves 8.

The flavour is very strong thanks to the Gorgonzola, however with the apple and walnut it all really comes together well.

And to think I never used to like the idea of a risotto because I thought it'd be just gluggy rice. This was my second, and now I'm hooked and can't wait to try some other risotto recipes!

Synchronicity or good timing?

I've noticed a lot of articles recently about the future of application development and there's a lot of talk about Flex in there. It could just be synchronicity - ie. because Flex is basically my new job I suddenly notice Flex everywhere - or it could just be Year of the Flex. The people at my new employer believe so.

Cycle Commuter?

I've had to make some sacrifices to take this new job I start in 2 weeks. One of those is that I'll no longer have a 15-20 minute walk to work, but instead need to commute. Best case is about 35 minutes door to door, and involves either two buses or a 25 minute walk to Wynyard and then a bus over the Bridge (at least they're frequent - every 2 to 3 minutes).

My other option, which they actually mentioned that a lot of their staff do, is a bicycle commute. Read on for more gibberish, which is more of a brain dump than anything useful to the public.

Goodbye Domino!

After six and a half years at my current employer, and 8 years doing Domino development, in 3 weeks I say goodbye to the platform. I started on R4.5 doing Intranet development as a graduate out of uni, having never used or seen Notes / Domino before. This was pretty much right on 8 years ago, January 1999. Since then I have moved through R5 and R6, doing web applications and web content management systems in Notes / Domino as my primary work. It's been fun, but it's also been frustrating being stuck with such a crappy development environment.

Recipe: Tomato Chicken Wings with Pasta

This is a recipe that I learned from my mum. When I lived at home there was a period where this would be the standard dinner every Monday. I'm not sure where she got it from, it doesn't really seem like a Polish recipe, but she cooked it for years. I still enjoy making it occasionally, as while it takes time it doesn't need a huge amount of effort to prepare, and I haven't become bored with it and still enjoy eating it!

Chicken wings, as served.

Flex: Barcode Scanner

So this isn't an original idea, but I'm learning Flex stuff and it was a fun little project. I saw that Mike Shaw of Webqem had done this webcam barcode reading demo, so I thought I'd see how hard it was. It's not as accurate as Mike's, but it's not bad for a few hours work.

So here's the witty social commentary part of the blog! Well, maybe not so witty. All about Paris Hilton (gawd).
