Goodbye Domino!
After six and a half years at my current employer, and 8 years doing Domino development, in 3 weeks I say goodbye to the platform. I started on R4.5 doing Intranet development as a graduate out of uni, having never used or seen Notes / Domino before. This was pretty much right on 8 years ago, January 1999. Since then I have moved through R5 and R6, doing web applications and web content management systems in Notes / Domino as my primary work. It's been fun, but it's also been frustrating being stuck with such a crappy development environment.
In a total change I'm going to work for a small company, after having worked at a large bank and then a large insurer. Also the company is an Adobe partner, and so I will be working with all of the web development technologies Adobe comes out with - primarily Flex, Flash and Coldfusion, and anything else the customer wants (Connect, Captivate, etc..). My role is a "senior web developer", and I will have the opportunity to work with some great creative / UI people and translate their designs to working applications.
I expect the initial period to be challenging as I get my head around all these new technologies, but my previous exposure to Flash and Flex, and playing with Coldfusion for the last week should give me a running start.
Of course if a client asks whether we can do something with Domino, we'll say yes and I'll be stuck with the job, but at least it will only be a project and not my life. Hopefully!
So expect less Domino content, any more Flex, Flash and Coldfusion content!
