We had a discussion at work recently about whether it is faster to stampAll for multiple fields, or to update the fields and then save. The short answer? If you're updating fewer than 5 fields it is faster to stampAll rather than update the document and save. For the long answer, read on for some comparisons and ugly standard Excel graphs due to lack of time.

Holy crap, I had never realised just how phallic Megatron was. This is from the toy's box art:
I'm sure that's some sort of metaphor for guns being used to make up for a lack of penis. Err, I don't mean by single women in the bedroom either.
In other Transformers news, if you haven't heard they're making a new Transformers movie. There has been some leaked "Work in Progress" art of the new Megatron:

The new Megatron
Doesn't really look like the Transformers of the 80s, but rather some robot alien thing with lots of sharp bits. The toy will certainly not be suitable for small children as they could get some nasty cuts from playing with that thing.
I think I'll write some more about the movie later, I need to sleep now.

Coca-Cola has decided to show just how stupid people really are, by launching new cans that contain less Coke but cost more.
Apparently, according to the article:
The aluminium can with a minimalist label, in three Coke flavours, is targeted at women in their 20s who want to buy smaller cans when they are on the go.
Guess what! You could buy the normal can, for 50c less, AND JUST NOT DRINK IT ALL! Of course you wouldn't look as trendy and cool, because you'd have the old fat can instead of these new slim ones. And people would KNOW you're a cheap bastard who won't spend the extra 50c for the latest and greatest product.
I don't blame Coca-Cola, they're just trying to make a buck. I blame the society that their marketing department obviously found would pay more for an inferior product, just to be trendy.

Here is another attempt at doing some more technical blogging, but since all the other content isn't that exciting anyway it's not like this will be much different. Eventually I will set it up such that tech.junkheap.net will display only the tech posts, and I can have posts that don't show up on the "front page" but just on the tech page. I can do this for other tags too, like bushwalking or cooking.
But on with the nerd talk..

So a lot of the recipes in the Thai cookbook I use have a weird method of the initial step of cooking the meat. For example say the recipe calls for 500g of sliced beef, and 4 chopped cloves of garlic. The recipe will say to fry half the garlic until light brown, then add half the meat and stir fry for 2 or 3 minutes. It then says to remove the meat, and repeat with the other half of the garlic and meat. At the end you put ALL the meat back in, add sauces and continue.
The only reason I can see for doing this is if you have a pathetic little wok that can't even hold 500g of meat while stir frying. Bah! Those kinds of woks are an abomination unto Nuggan.

My wok which happily holds 1KG of meat and vegetables and has room for stirring and frying.

I was having a look at how hard it is to encrypt something using asymmetric encryption (that is, public key / private key encryption) using Java. Turns out that it's not too hard at all, but as with all Java stuff it's a whole load of Factories and abstractions to get there. I also discuss how this stuff can be used with Domino, just so I can make this my first "Show and Tell Thursday" article!

Eating our fresh mussels for dinner tonight we found some baby crustaceans in a fair few of them! Hard to tell who was eating who, but I suspect the crustaceans (crabs and a Moreton Bay Bug from the looks of it) were probably crawling inside the open mussel to eat it and then the mussel was closing, trapping the little sea creature.

Anyway, it didn't detract from the delicious meal, apart from requiring a bit of extra care. Although they were soft, so probably could have quite easily been eaten without any trouble. Should have gotten some better pictures in better light in retrospect, oh well.
