Pierdolony Website!

Hey. I keep forgetting this thing is here. People who I don't expect know about Junkheap keep saying "you should update more often", so after a few cutting remarks about their mother I realise that yes, maybe I should.

I don't actually have anything to say though. Christmas is over (thank God.. HAHAHA) and now we head towards New Years with a spring in our step, a sparkle in our eye, and half a kilo of ash in our lungs. Yes, for some Christmas means snow and freezing cold, for Sydneysiders it means finding your presents in the burnt out ruins of your family home and living it what feels like a post-apocalyptic world because of the haze and general unpleasantness.

I got useful stuff for christmas like a lamp for my living room, some desk calendars, socks (of course) and other miscellany. Spent 4 days with my parents at their place, which was pretty entertaining. The new dog (Budrys) is a cool customer.

In other news, it seems after 4 days of not being turned on my gateway's harddrive is having issues. A few hearty smacks upside it's heads and it seems to be going again, but I probably should think about replacing it. I might see what I can get for $500 in terms of upgrading the gateway (currently a P100, 64MB RAM, 800Mb HDD running OpenBSD 2.6).

I should be able to get a 800Mhz or so CPU (I'll see if Duron or Celeron is more affordable, the motherboard price would likely be the deciding factor), 128MB of RAM, a 20Gb HDD and reuse the current CDROM, case, etc. I'd like to play around with X and so on (since it'd be beefy enough) so I don't know if maybe loonix would be a better OS choice despite its suckiness as a gateway. At least on this P100 OBSD shits all over Linux 2.2.something, whatever it was when I ran redhat before OBSD) because of the greater proliferation of X related stuff for linux. I'll see. EYO isn't open for another 2 weeks anyway.

I find it interesting that I after 4 days out in the real world I have more to say about a computer related idea I had in the last half hour than about anything in the real world. I think i'm an anti-social nutbag (nice!).

Our Day at the Dirt Bike Races (Repost)

This was posted when the site was up before, but since it wasn't in the database it survived so I'll link to it again.

It's the photo collection from the dirt bike races at Darling Harbour.

We're back! And we're not happy!

G'day. Junkheap is finally back up and running after about two weeks of downage due to the hosting provider having some problems.

The major bad though is that apparently the MySQL databases weren't being backed up, and since all junkheap content is basically database driven we've lost everything since we relaunched two months ago or whenever it was. That's basically all the new titles, movie reviews and postings. Oh yeah, and the people that signed up for email updates since the relaunch will have to sign up again.

So yeah, I think i'll have to back up the database myself every now and then incase something goes awry again. Ah well, you live, you learn :) (Mainly not to make any assumptions when paying less than $5USD a month for hosting)

[Update] Setup a "cron" job to dump, compress and email me the database every night!
